This hotel was built by refurbishing an old Machiya-syle townhouse in Kyoto, which stands gracefully for 220 years.
We hope the guests of this hotel can feel everyday life of Kyoto.

This hotel is situated in Rokken-machi-dori, which is one block west of Senbon-dori and two blocks north of Imadegawa-dori. This street is once called Nishibo-jo-koji in Heian period (794 to 1185 AD). You can find many old Machiya townhouses in this street. There are many historic sight, including Kitano-tenmangu shrine, Kamishichiken, Hirano Shrine and Daihoon-ji Temple (Senbon Shakado), in which you can see the oldest building which is designated as National Tresure.
The building of this hotel belonged to Nakagawa family for long time. According to the record of this building, which is found in warehouse, this building is built around 220 years ago, in 1796. A old oil-jar is found in the warehouse, showing that this building is used by oil-merchant.
This building is surrounded by brown plastered wall. The building is low and inconspicuous, in harmony with other buildings in Rokken-machi-dori. Buildings in Rokken-machi, such as our hotel, is not as glittering as those in Hokomachi.
There is a pine tree in front of the building, in which you can find a well, a lantern box and a tea room. It is conjectured that this building had been the place where neighborhood gathers.
The guests do not only stay in traditional Machiya townhouse, but also feel the traditional Japanese cultures which is characterized by tea ceremony, flower arrangement, trascription of Buddist sutra and ink brush paintings. We hope you can relax in this hotel, by escaping from the hustle and bustle of the day.
We spend more than one year in renovating the building. One of the important tasks in this rennovation is to keep them as original as possible. There are many regulations in this project as the total area of the building exceeds 100 square meters. We are very happy as we can complete the rennovation thanks to the help of many people and organizations.
It is often the case that large old Machiya townhouses have wonderful spaces inside, as these townhouses are owned and maintained by wealthy merchant. However, the number of these Machiya townhouses is declining as it is costly to conserve.
We are able to conserve and utilize Machiya townhouse, which can be an important tourist resources of Kyoto. Please let us know if you need any help.
